Tokyo Game Show 2018

The 2018 Tokyo Game show was open to the public on October 22 and 23rd, to which I attended on the latter day. It was my first time at this con despite having heard news come out of it for almost a decade. My thoughts!

TGS took place at the MakuhariMesse Hall in Chiba (where Nico Nico Chokaigi is held). The event itself was perhaps a little smaller than I imagined, but was still quite large. Perhaps my expectations were thwarted by other large-sized cons I’ve attended like NYCC, Fan Expo, and Comiket.

I arrived at the con to meet my friend at 11am, an hour after it opened. Train ride from my house takes about an hour and a half. Tickets at the door were only 1200 yen so a fairly decent price. We mostly checked out games for the first 3 hours, going through the various game booths. It felt like there was a lot of VR stuff this year, especially in the north building.

VR games including cycling, Tron-motorcycles, and other were some highlights. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to try them out, but they looked to be a blast.

One game I really wanted to try out but couldn’t because of the long wait times was Jump Force, the action-fighting game bringing together all the Shonen Jump characters from various shows like DBZ, YuYu Hakusho, YuGiOh, HunterxHunter, etc… into epic fights! I’ll just have to wait to buy it on my Xbox One.

Around 2 o’clock we headed to the cosplay area, and I have to say it was packed tight. The area itself was the smallest I’ve seen yet at a Japanese con. Located outside in front of the north building. We spent maybe an hour in this area before heading back in to finish the rest of the convention floor area.

I didn’t end up buying anything, but did get some swag on top of trying out a few games; mostly indies. Regardless, it was nice to finally attend the con I’ve been hearing so much about!
